Highway 1 through Big Sur closes more often than most American highways. Landslides, winter storms and fires shut parts of it, sometimes for a night, sometimes for years. In January 2026 the last long closure, at Regent's Slide in south Big Sur, ended early.
Here is where things stand in November 2026, the repair work you may meet, how to check the road before you go, and how the season changes the day.
The quick answer
Yes. Highway 1 is open end to end through Big Sur: Caltrans reopened the 6.8-mile closure at Regent's Slide, near Ragged Point, at noon on 14 January 2026, ahead of schedule. Short repair closures still happen, such as overnight full closures in October 2026 near Nepenthe and north of Point Sur. Check Caltrans QuickMap the day before. September and October bring the clearest weather. Every tour here cancels for a full refund up to 24 hours before.

Is Highway 1 open through Big Sur right now?
Yes. Since 14 January 2026 the road runs the full length of Big Sur, from Carmel to San Simeon, for the first time in about three years.
The Governor's office announced the early reopening of Regent's Slide, a 6.8-mile closure in south Big Sur near Ragged Point, at noon on 14 January 2026, ahead of the estimate of 30 March (Governor of California). Caltrans keeps a project page for the slide repair. The fire-related closure of autumn 2026 also lifted, with the highway fully open again by 9 October.

Check dates for the private Big Sur tour from MontereyAre there any Highway 1 closures in Big Sur in 2026?
Only short ones for repairs. In October 2026 Caltrans closed the road overnight near Nepenthe and north of Point Sur Lighthouse.
- 8 to 9 October: overnight full closure near Nepenthe for drainage repair (Caltrans).
- 12 to 15 October, 11 pm to 5 am: full closures north of Point Sur Lighthouse to remove sheet piles from the emergency embankment repair begun in February, then one-way traffic control on 16 October (Caltrans).
- From 16 November 2026: ramps at State Park Drive in Rio del Mar, Santa Cruz County, close for about five months. This is on the way from San Francisco, not in Big Sur (Caltrans).
Overnight work rarely touches a daytime tour, but it can affect a late drive back.

How do you check if Highway 1 is open?
On Caltrans QuickMap, which shows live closures, chain controls and lane work. Check the evening before and the morning you go.
QuickMap shows closures on a map and works on a phone. Caltrans District 5, which covers Monterey and San Luis Obispo counties, posts planned work in its news releases. You can also call the Caltrans highway information line at 1-800-427-7623 and enter 1 for the route. Phone signal is patchy in Big Sur, so check before you leave Carmel.

What happens if Highway 1 closes on your tour day?
Operators change the route or cancel. If they cancel, Viator offers a new date or a refund; you can also cancel for a full refund up to 24 hours before.
The San Francisco day tours spend most of the day on the Monterey Peninsula, so a Big Sur closure mostly affects the Big Sur day and the private tours. Watch the forecast in winter. In storms the coast can lose power and the road can close at short notice.

September and October for clear skies and warm days. Spring for green hills and wildflowers. Summer for long days, if you can live with fog.
- September and October: the clearest months on the coast, with the summer crowds thinning.
- March to May: green slopes, wildflowers and the waterfalls at their fullest.
- June to August: "June gloom" fog often hides the coast in the morning; afternoons may clear.
- November to February: quiet and often crisp, but storms can close the road.

In Carmel on a clear morning? The e-bike tour rides the 17-Mile Drive in 2.5 hours, ten riders at most, from $75.

No, but it can hide the whole coast. Summer mornings are the foggiest; the marine layer often burns off by early afternoon.
Drive slowly with dipped headlights and use the turnouts if the car behind wants to pass. If the morning is grey, start with the 17-Mile Drive or Point Lobos and head into Big Sur after lunch. Inland valleys such as Carmel Valley are often sunny when the coast is not.

Is there parking trouble on Highway 1?
At the famous stops, yes. Bixby Bridge has a no-parking zone since August 2026, and the McWay Falls and Point Lobos lots fill early.
Monterey County bans parking along Highway 1 for about 900 feet north and 700 feet south of Bixby Bridge for 12 months (CBS News). McWay Falls charges $10 a car and Point Lobos $10 inside; both lots are small. Arrive early, never park on the traffic side of the white line, and read the Bixby and McWay guide for each stop.
Can you drive Highway 1 at night?
You can, but you see nothing and the curves are harder. Plan to be off the Big Sur stretch by dusk.
There are no street lights, few services and wildlife on the road. Overnight repair closures, when they happen, usually run from 11 pm to 5 am. If you would rather not drive at all, compare the options in drive it or take a tour.
